A widespread Proton outage disrupted access to Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Lumo, and several other platforms on August 26, 2026. Proton confirmed the disruption on its status page and said user data remained safe throughout the incident.
The company reported that the outage affected a broad range of its offerings, including Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, SimpleLogin, Proton Wallet, and Lumo by Proton. The problems were initially confirmed at 6:09 p.m. ET, coinciding with a rise in reports on Downdetector and complaints from users on X.
Company Rolls Out a Fix
After its early investigation and mitigation work, Proton reclassified all issues as partial outages. In a status update posted at 7:37 p.m. ET, the company said its recovery efforts were producing results and that services were beginning to come back for some users while operations continued.
In a message on X, Proton addressed customers directly, stating that its engineering team was working on a fix and that no data had been lost. The company apologized for the disruption and pointed users to its status page for live updates.
Most Services Recovered
In an update at 8:14 p.m. ET, Proton said a fix had been implemented and that it was monitoring the results. According to the company, most services had been restored for most users at that point, though efforts to recover the remaining instances were still underway.
Proton had not yet marked the incident as fully resolved as of that final update, with recovery operations continuing for the affected accounts and platforms.
