YouTube is overhauling how its mobile app connects to your television, and the biggest change is that a shared Wi-Fi network is no longer required to send videos from your phone to the big screen. Instead of relying on a local network connection, the new system uses account-based pairing, meaning both devices simply need to be signed in to the same account.
Google detailed the update in a post on the YouTube support forums. As part of the refresh, the company is describing your phone as a “companion” device and retiring the familiar Cast icon in favor of a more generic design. The changes reportedly entered testing earlier in 2026 and are now moving toward a full rollout.
What’s Changing in YouTube Casting
The revamp goes beyond new terminology. By shifting to account-based management, YouTube aims to reduce friction when moving content from a phone to a TV. Key updates include:

The new “Play on different device” control resembles the existing casting menu, but it no longer requires you to start playing a video on your phone before sending it to the TV. That streamlines the process for viewers who prefer to pick content directly from their feed.
The move to account-based pairing is central to the update. It is well suited to private viewing sessions, such as casting from your own phone to your own television. However, it is unclear whether the change fully removes the ability to cast over a shared Wi-Fi network, a common approach at larger gatherings where multiple people take turns queuing videos.
