Google is reportedly pursuing licensing agreements with several of Hollywood’s largest studios, aiming to train its AI models on copyrighted material in exchange for substantial payments. According to unnamed sources, company executives have approached multiple studio representatives with pitches centered on its AI technology, though no formal agreements have been reached with Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, or Universal.

The proposed arrangements would give Google permission to use studios’ extensive libraries of copyrighted content for AI training. In return, the company is prepared to spend hundreds of millions of dollars. Reports suggest Google could pay a studio such as Disney or Pixar around EUR 35 million for the rights to generate outputs featuring a single copyrighted character. That figure could climb into the billions as deals expand to cover more characters, and studios might also secure a share of the advertising revenue Google earns from AI-generated content featuring their intellectual property on platforms like YouTube.

Why the Deals Matter for Google

Expensive as these partnerships would be, they represent a valuable asset as Google works to cement its standing as a leading player in the AI field. The ability for Gemini to produce studio-approved images of characters like Darth Vader and Snow White could help ordinary users view generative AI in a more favorable light. After years of AI companies touting plans to disrupt industries and eliminate jobs, public sentiment toward the technology has turned increasingly negative, particularly among younger audiences.

Even with popular tools like ChatGPT in wide use, the broader AI industry remains entangled in controversy and concerns about real-world harms. Securing agreements with film and television studios would give Google a straightforward way to reshape the narrative around its AI ambitions.

The Risks for Hollywood

While there is little downside for Google, the deals carry distinct risks for each studio considering a deep investment in AI. Aligning with Google could benefit Hollywood in the short term but might just as easily backfire, leaving audiences feeling let down by the entertainment industry.

Content produced through these partnerships would likely appear more polished than material generated by models trained on improperly sourced data. Placing Google’s name and logos on officially sanctioned AI-generated content would help legitimize the technology in the public’s mind. Even absent that effect, the partnerships would signal to the public that major studios regard generative AI as a tool worth adopting.

The value of that framing is difficult to quantify. As of now, Google has not finalized any agreements with the major studios it has approached.
