Xbox Cloud Gaming is introducing monthly play-time limits that will cap how long subscribers can stream games before they need to pay extra. Microsoft announced the change today, and it takes effect in November 2026.

Until now, Xbox Game Pass subscribers could use cloud gaming without any restriction on hours. Under the new policy, the number of streaming hours available each month depends on your subscription tier, ranging from 5 to 15 hours.

How the New Hour Limits Break Down

The monthly allotments are tied to each Xbox Game Pass plan. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers receive 15 hours per month, Game Pass Premium members get 10 hours, and Game Pass Essential users are limited to 5 hours.

Microsoft says the change will affect roughly 4% of Game Pass subscribers, indicating that most users do not currently exceed those thresholds.

Buying Additional Cloud Gaming Hours

Once a player uses up their monthly allotment, additional hours can be purchased through the Xbox Store. Pricing has not yet been revealed, and Microsoft says more details will arrive in November, when the policy officially begins.

The company is also opening up cloud gaming access beyond subscribers. Players who are not active Game Pass members will be able to buy streaming hours directly, without holding an ongoing subscription.

Why Microsoft Is Making the Change

Microsoft explained that the shift comes because the cost of delivering cloud gaming rises as more people use the service and play for longer stretches. The move reflects the growing infrastructure demands of streaming games at scale.

The new limits take effect in November 2026, with pricing for extra hours to be announced at that time.
