Nothing OS 5.0, the company’s take on Android 17, has entered open beta, but early adopters are running into error messages as demand outpaces expectations. The Nothing Phone (3) is the first device eligible for the download.
The update brings a range of interface refinements. Highlights include homescreen transparency changes, new lockscreen clock faces, support for Google’s fresh 3D emoji set, and additional apps baked into the software.
Which Devices Get Android 17 First
The open beta lets users test the software ahead of a full public release, with bugs still being worked out. The Nothing Phone (3) leads the rollout, followed by the Phone (4a) Pro in early September. More devices are slated to join the program through December.
A stable release is not far behind. Nothing has scheduled the official launch for the Phone (3) around mid-October. Other models will have to wait until at least November before receiving the finished version of Nothing OS 5.0.
Download Errors Hit Early Users
Although the beta is technically live, the launch has not been entirely smooth. Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis said the company is seeing an “overwhelming response,” with far more people downloading the update than anticipated. That surge is triggering error messages for some users.
The problems appear to be tied to the download process itself rather than installation. Rather than a device-level issue with the Phone (3) handling Android 17, the trouble points to a bandwidth bottleneck on Nothing’s end as traffic spikes during the initial rollout.
Evangelidis said the team is working to stabilize the servers and asked affected users to try again shortly. The company confirmed a fix is being applied, suggesting the disruption may be a brief hiccup during the opening phase of the Nothing OS 5.0 beta.
Nothing OS 5.0 will not reach a wider public release until October, giving the company time to address bugs surfaced by beta testers before the stable version ships.
