Apple has committed to donating funds to support relief and rebuilding efforts after flash floods and mudslides killed hundreds of people across Nepal and Tibet. The pledge, announced by CEO Tim Cook, marks the latest in a string of humanitarian contributions the company has made in response to natural disasters around the world.
Cook shared the announcement publicly, stating that the company’s thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragic flash floods and mudslides in the region. He confirmed that Apple is making a donation to aid relief workers and rebuilding projects on the ground.
What Triggered the Disaster
The catastrophe unfolded on Wednesday when the lower section of a Himalayan glacier collapsed. The falling debris temporarily dammed a river before giving way, unleashing a surge of floodwaters and mud downstream. The disaster claimed hundreds of lives, displaced numerous residents, and caused widespread damage to villages, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure.
Rescue and recovery operations remain ongoing across the affected areas, where the destruction has cut off access to communities and complicated relief distribution.
Apple’s Ongoing Disaster Relief Efforts
This contribution arrives just days after Apple announced a similar donation to support earthquake relief in Indonesia. Over recent months, the company has provided emergency aid following disasters in Venezuela, Southern Europe, and Japan, among other regions.
Beyond its response to natural disasters, Apple operates an internal charitable initiative known as Employee Giving. Through its donation-matching policy, the program has raised more than EUR 756 million to date, amplifying the impact of contributions made by the company’s workforce.
Apple has not disclosed the specific dollar amount of its donation for the Nepal and Tibet relief efforts. The company typically directs its disaster contributions to organizations coordinating on-the-ground response, though the recipients for this particular effort were not named.
The glacier collapse that set off the flooding began Wednesday, and the resulting floodwaters and mudslides have left hundreds dead across Nepal and Tibet.
