Nvidia has reportedly agreed to acquire the AI development platform Hugging Face for EUR 11 billion, according to a report citing a person familiar with the deal. If the agreement is finalized, the purchase could reinforce Nvidia’s open-model strategy, open a new channel to sell AI hardware, and help defend its dominant hardware business as Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and other hyperscalers build their own accelerators.

Nvidia already sells hundreds of billions of dollars in AI hardware each year. The company’s success rests largely on the ubiquity of its CUDA software stack and the leading performance of its chips. But another key factor is that many AI models are trained on Nvidia hardware and optimized to run on it, which means the more models trained on its platforms, the more products the company eventually sells.

What Hugging Face Brings to the Table

Hugging Face is best known for the Hugging Face Hub, a GitHub-style repository where researchers and developers publish, discover, download, and collaborate on AI models, datasets, and applications. The company also develops widely used software such as the Transformers library and provides tools and cloud services for training, optimizing, and deploying models across different types of AI hardware.

Beyond hosting models, datasets, and applications, Hugging Face offers software that helps developers optimize and deploy AI models on various CPUs, GPUs, and accelerators. Its Inference Endpoints service lets customers run models on managed infrastructure hosted by AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Users can select the provider, region, hardware type, and instance for each deployment.

Why the Deal Matters for Nvidia

Notably, the hardware available through those cloud providers is not all Nvidia. Depending on the provider, Hugging Face currently supports configurations including AWS Inferentia, AMD Instinct, Google TPU, Intel CPUs, and Nvidia accelerators, among others. That mix of models, datasets, popular applications, and cross-hardware optimization makes the platform strategically valuable to Nvidia.

In theory, Nvidia could steer the platform toward exclusive reliance on its own hardware, but such a move would likely draw backlash from the developer community, making it unlikely in the short term. More plausibly, Nvidia wants open models to remain competitive with proprietary offerings from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, which could eventually be optimized for non-Nvidia hardware.

The company has been building its own Nemotron open models and has committed tens of billions of dollars to the effort. As Hugging Face grows, adoption of AI hardware in general, and Nvidia hardware in particular, tends to rise with it. The reported acquisition price stands at EUR 11 billion.
