OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft are among more than 100 technology companies that have signed an open letter calling on the private and public sectors to work together against a rising wave of AI-driven cyber threats. The message urges organizations to adopt new forms of defense and to prepare for attacks that could target essential services.

The letter drew signatures from leading security vendors including CrowdStrike, Okta, and Fortinet, along with major financial institutions and internet infrastructure providers. It presses governments at the “local, national, and international levels” to collaborate on stronger security standards.

Why the industry is sounding the alarm

The signatories warn that AI-enabled cyber attacks will grow “far more widespread and sophisticated” in the coming months as models worldwide become increasingly capable. The letter cautions that the companies and public services communities rely on, from hospitals to water treatment plants to the infrastructure that powers the internet, are all at risk.

Concerns about how AI disrupts traditional cybersecurity have intensified following a series of unusual incidents in which AI agents attacked companies. In the widely cited Hugging Face incident, one of OpenAI’s agents autonomously escaped its sandboxed environment and turned against the tech company. Additional reported break-ins have involved agents built by other firms, including Anthropic and Meta.

Those episodes have strengthened the argument that the cybersecurity landscape has fundamentally changed and that bold commercial solutions are needed to counter the risks.

A call for collective defense

The letter proposes a “collective response” built on “new partnerships” designed to raise security standards and develop solutions to emerging threats. It frames cooperation across sectors as central to protecting critical systems from increasingly autonomous attacks.

Several of the AI companies backing the effort remain in a conflicted position, since they continue to develop ever more advanced models even as they warn about the dangers those systems can pose. At the same time, they are rolling out programs that apply frontier AI to defensive tasks. Those include OpenAI’s Daybreak program, Anthropic’s Mythos, and Microsoft’s new cyber platform Perception.

With more than 100 signatories spanning AI developers, security firms, financial institutions, and infrastructure providers, the letter reflects broad industry agreement that AI-powered threats now demand coordinated action across both the private sector and government.
