Hoomanely, a Palo Alto startup, is betting that a sensor-equipped feeding bowl paired with an AI platform can help dog owners identify health problems sooner. Dogs are notoriously skilled at masking illness, and by the time symptoms become obvious, a condition may already be advanced. The company’s system aims to close that gap by tracking subtle changes in a pet’s daily routine.
The centerpiece of the product is the EverBowl, a feeding station that measures how much food and water a dog consumes along with eating speed. It also records chewing and swallowing sounds, facial thermals, oral motions, and additional signals. Because dogs return to the same bowl in the same posture twice a day for years, the company argues it offers an unusually consistent environment for capturing health data.
How the AI Platform Builds a Health Record
Hoomanely’s platform analyzes the collected data to establish a baseline for each dog, then builds an ongoing health record. When it detects sustained departures from that baseline, the owner is notified through an app and in long-term reports. Owners can also enter information manually to keep the baseline current with details the sensors cannot capture. The company says these reports are designed to give veterinarians more useful data if and when they get involved.
According to co-founder and CEO Sai Supriya Sharath, appetite, hydration, and oral comfort are among the first things disrupted by pain, dental disease, digestive problems, endocrine changes, and illness. She noted that while dogs have evolved to hide lethargy and limping, they are far less capable of masking how they eat and drink, making altered intake a common early sign across many conditions.
Hoomanely developed the platform after an 18-month beta phase that gathered roughly 5 million data points across more than 80 dogs. In one case, the system flagged changes in a dog’s eating patterns that were later traced to a chipped tooth beginning to become infected. In another, sustained shifts from a dog’s eating and temperature baselines prompted an owner to visit the vet, resulting in a diagnosis of tick fever.
Pricing, Availability, and Current Limitations
The EverBowl and its app reports are offered through a subscription priced at EUR 25 per month. So far, the company appears to have shipped about 50 devices, and its beta cohort was relatively small.
Sharath said Hoomanely does not yet have independent sensitivity, specificity, or false-positive rates for clinical events, since establishing those figures would require a study comparing the system’s alerts against actual diagnoses. The company stresses that its platform is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis but a tool to help owners and vets identify potential issues faster.
To validate its approach across a broader population, Hoomanely is using its data for formal veterinary studies. Those studies are being designed to measure sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and false positives for each alert category, and the company intends to report the results.
