The TCL P80 series marks a major turning point for the company’s display technology, delivering the first NXTPAPER phones equipped with AMOLED panels. After previewing the concept at CES earlier this year, TCL has now made the lineup official, and all three models are confirmed to reach the United States, though a launch date has not yet been announced.
TCL’s NXTPAPER technology goes beyond a simple matte coating, but the panel itself has long been the weak point. Traditional NXTPAPER screens offered easy-on-the-eyes viewing yet lacked the vibrance and brightness found on the AMOLED and OLED displays common in modern smartphones. The P80 range addresses that gap directly.
What the TCL P80, P80 Pro, and P80 Ultra offer
Each of the three phones features a 6.83-inch 1.5K NXTPAPER AMOLED display, representing some of the most capable hardware TCL has assembled to date, even if the specs fall short of true flagship status. The devices run on MediaTek silicon, with the Ultra and Pro powered by the Dimensity 7400 Elite and the base model using the Dimensity 7300 Elite. These upper-mid-range chips deliver notably more performance than TCL’s typical offerings.
The TCL P80 Ultra comes with two 50MP rear cameras, including a telephoto lens, up to 512GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, a 6,800 mAh battery, and IP68 dust and water resistance. The P80 Pro shares nearly identical specs but swaps the second 50MP camera for an 8MP ultrawide. The standard P80 also pairs a 50MP main sensor with an 8MP ultrawide, but steps down to the less powerful chipset, a maximum of 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and a smaller 6,000 mAh battery.
Pricing and software support
The lineup launches in Europe starting today, priced at €349, €429, and €549 for the P80, P80 Pro, and P80 Ultra respectively. TCL has confirmed the phones will arrive in the US eventually, but has not shared an exact release window or American pricing.
Software support varies across the range. The P80 Ultra is backed by 7 years of OS and security updates. The Pro and base models receive 3 years of OS updates while still maintaining 7 years of security patches.
