Instagram is tightening its rules for accounts built around AI-generated influencers, warning that profiles that fail to disclose synthetic personas could see their reach limited across the platform.
The Meta-owned service announced the change in a blog post, framing it as part of a broader effort to bring transparency to the growing wave of AI-generated content on both Instagram and Facebook. The move targets accounts that present entirely artificial personalities as if they were real people.
A Renamed Label for AI Profiles
Instagram is replacing its existing “AI creator” label with a clearer “AI-generated profile” tag. The updated wording is meant to signal that viewers are not simply interacting with an account that uses AI tools, but with an influencer that is fully AI-generated.
Accounts that previously carried the “AI creator” label will have the opportunity to review their status. If the designation no longer matches their content, they can request that it be removed.
Reduced Reach for Unlabeled Accounts
The most significant part of the update focuses on profiles that feature an AI-generated person but do not use the label. Instagram says it will actively restrict these accounts, including keeping their content out of recommendations such as the “For You” feed.
Creators can avoid penalties by editing their profile and toggling on the AI-generated profile setting. Once enabled, the label appears on the profile and alongside content that does not already carry a tag indicating it was created or edited with AI. According to Instagram, creators who proactively add the AI-generated profile label will not see any change to their profile’s reach.
For accounts that are flagged, adding the label or appealing the decision can reverse the impact on visibility. The policy marks a notable shift for the platform as AI-generated material becomes increasingly common across Meta’s services.
