Tim Cook marked his final day as Apple CEO with an emotional memo to employees, reflecting on his tenure and thanking staff for their work. His last day in the role came before John Ternus was set to succeed him the following day.

In the note sent to employees, Cook wrote that he takes “enormous comfort in handing the helm to someone as brilliant and wonderful and capable” as Ternus. He praised the incoming leader’s product expertise, adding, “Few people understand what it takes to build products that change the world the way John does and I could not be more excited for his leadership.”

Cook Reflects on His Time Leading Apple

Cook told the team that his last day as chief executive was a moment he always knew would arrive, though he still found it difficult to believe. “I love this company and the team behind it,” he wrote, thanking employees for their affection and for “the privilege of a lifetime serving as your leader.”

He credited employees for his own achievements, noting he had never worked with “such an extraordinary team of people.” Cook described Apple’s culture as its defining strength, writing that “culture triumphs over everything” and that the company shares a belief that its work matters and carries a responsibility to leave the world better than it found it.

Stepping Away From the Role, Not the Company

Cook emphasized that he is not leaving Apple, but is stepping away from a role he loved deeply. He said he would miss leading the team while remaining “completely at peace” with his decision.

Referencing late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Cook wrote that the team had made it possible to leave their “dent in the universe.” He closed by telling employees he hopes they will continue to be proud to be part of Apple and always give it their best.

The leadership transition places John Ternus at the helm of the company, taking over the CEO position the day after Cook’s final day in the role.
