Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 has arrived as a substantial update ahead of the platform’s stable release, which is scheduled for December. While the drop is smaller than the previous beta, it introduces meaningful additions across privacy, notifications, and system customization, along with a long list of bug fixes.
The beta is available for a wide range of compatible Pixel devices, including the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 7a, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8 lineup, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9 family, Pixel 9a, the full Pixel 10 range, and the Pixel 10a. This release also marks a platform stability milestone, meaning the core APIs and app-facing behaviors are now finalized ahead of launch.
New Privacy and Notification Features
A key focus of this build is expanded transparency around on-device processing. A new Private Compute Core log appears under Settings, then Security & privacy, then Privacy dashboard, then Data logging. Private Compute Core is a secure environment isolated from the rest of the operating system and apps, first introduced by Google in 2021. It powers features such as Now Playing, Smart Reply, Live Translate, Live Caption, Google Messages spam detection, and Cough & Snore Detection.
The update also adds an Agents dashboard, found under Settings, then Security & privacy, then Privacy controls, then Agents. On the notification side, a Voice broadcast Quick Settings tile consolidates AI-powered notification summaries and the notification organizer, along with the notification cooldown feature.
Customization gets attention as well. Wallpaper & style now includes new badges, and the release brings additional status bar customization options for users who want more control over how the interface is displayed.
Bug Fixes and Pixel 11 Support
Beta 4 addresses a range of issues reported in earlier builds. Among the resolved problems is a thermal management bug that caused devices to overheat and reboot unexpectedly during use. Fixes also target a transparent status bar that appeared on the launcher after exiting fullscreen video, unresponsive gesture navigation when apps rendered below the display cutout, and a screen mirroring failure with external USB-C XR glasses.
Charging behavior sees improvements too, with a fix for the 80% battery limit optimization that had caused excessive charge times during the final two percent. Additional corrections address a launcher issue where searching the app drawer failed to register text input, a missing background blur behind the navigation bar when the power menu was opened with hardware buttons, and call audio that defaulted to the phone speaker instead of connected Bluetooth devices.
Other fixes cover a Recents app switcher rendering glitch, where the first task card could freeze and clip behind other apps during horizontal scrolling, and an audio service resource lock triggered during screen recording that blocked microphone usage.
