Apple’s environmental commitments are facing their toughest challenge yet as the company scales up its artificial intelligence ambitions, according to Greenpeace. The advocacy group argues that Apple’s response to the energy demands of AI will serve as the “defining test” of whether the company can uphold its climate pledges.
For more than a decade, Greenpeace has recognized Apple’s environmental work, including a 2015 report highlighting its use of renewable energy to power data centers. Last year, Greenpeace East Asia awarded the company a B+ grade for expanding renewable energy across its supply chains.
Renewable Energy Progress Continues
Apple remains a leader in powering its operations with renewable energy, even as its infrastructure expands rapidly. All three data center expansions the company announced over the past year will run on renewable energy. Apple has also encouraged major colocation providers to support its goal of reaching 100% renewable energy.
That track record has been largely unmatched among major technology companies. However, the growing computational needs tied to Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features could complicate the picture.
Why AI Raises the Stakes
Apple aims to handle as many tasks as possible directly on-device. Still, more complex requests rely on large-scale data centers, which consume significant amounts of electricity and water. With Siri AI set to launch next month, those demands are expected to grow substantially.
Greenpeace spokesperson Avex Li framed the issue as a pivotal moment for the company. “AI will be the defining test of Apple’s climate commitments,” Li said. “To preserve Tim Cook’s environmental legacy, the company will need to show that AI growth can be accommodated within its existing climate commitments through absolute emissions reductions, additional renewable energy investment, and longer-lasting products.”
Apple’s Response
In reply to the criticism, Apple pointed to its most recent environmental progress report, along with previous statements it has made on the subject. The company has consistently emphasized its renewable energy investments and its efforts to reduce emissions across its supply chain.
Apple’s Siri AI is scheduled to launch next month, marking the point at which its expanded data center demands will begin in earnest.
