Uber has become the first company to launch a commercial robotaxi service in London, edging out rival Waymo to bring driverless ridehailing to the British capital. The vehicles run on autonomous driving technology developed by Wayve, a UK-based startup, and will initially operate with safety drivers seated behind the wheel.
The debut marks a significant milestone for Uber, which has spent several years preparing a UK rollout alongside Wayve. By reaching the market first, Uber gains the opportunity to define the robotaxi experience for thousands of Londoners. The launch also serves as an early test of consumer demand for driverless rides outside the United States and China, where the majority of the world’s robotaxis currently operate, along with a limited presence in the Middle East.
London-based riders interested in trying the autonomous vehicles can enable the option within the Uber app’s settings. When booking through UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric, customers may be matched with a Wayve-powered autonomous vehicle, though a pairing is not guaranteed. Wayve’s fleet currently uses Ford Mustang Mach-E models, with the Nissan Leaf planned for future additions.
How the Robotaxis Operate
Safety drivers will monitor the vehicles from the front seat but will not control the driving. Uber says these drivers will be phased out over time as the service transitions to fully driverless operation. All safety drivers are licensed by Transport for London, the city’s transit authority.
Notably, the service will operate without a geofence, the virtual boundary that restricts where most robotaxis can travel. Uber attributes this to Wayve’s AV2.0 system, which the company says is designed to move beyond the limits of conventional autonomous driving technology. According to Wayve, traditional AV1.0 systems depend on hand-engineered software stacks, HD maps, and rule-based programming that limit scalability. AV2.0 instead relies on a single, learned AI driver trained to understand its surroundings, anticipate risk, and adapt to new environments.
Uber will handle vehicle maintenance and servicing in partnership with UK fleet operator Otto Car, while Wayve retains control of the autonomous driving system.
Wayve’s Camera-Based Approach
Founded in 2017 by two machine learning PhD students from the University of Cambridge, Wayve says its system can learn as it drives, adapting to new roads, weather conditions, and traffic scenarios much like a human. The vehicles rely on cameras and radar for perception but do not use lidar, the laser-based sensor favored by Waymo and many other operators. This aligns Wayve with Tesla, which also forgoes lidar for its robotaxis.
Wayve describes its technology as hardware agnostic, with a software stack capable of running on whatever sensors and chips an automaker chooses. Additional sensors such as lidar can be integrated if a manufacturer prefers, but AV2.0 is built to function without HD maps or costly hardware. Beyond its partnership with Uber, Wayve is also collaborating with Stellantis on hands-free driving technology.
