X Money is now the exclusive channel for U.S. creator payouts on Elon Musk’s social network. X confirmed on Wednesday that, effective immediately, all payouts for American creators will flow through its in-app payments service rather than the previous system powered by Stripe.
The change covers earnings from both the Original Content Rewards Program and creator subscriptions. According to X, creators can access their money the moment it is sent, eliminating the previous wait tied to billing cycles and minimum thresholds.
What Changes for US Creators
Under the prior arrangement, X processed payments every two weeks and required a minimum payout of EUR 26 before creators could withdraw funds. The new system removes that structure in favor of instant transfers.
The shift is mandatory for U.S.-based creators. A company representative confirmed that the change is required domestically, while creators outside the United States will continue to receive payments through Stripe. The announcement’s wording indicates no alternative payout method is available for American users.
Creators already set up on X Money need to take no action, and their next payout will arrive there automatically. Those not yet enrolled must open an X Money account to keep receiving funds.
How X Money Works
X Money launched creator payout support earlier this month as part of Musk’s broader effort to turn X into an “everything app.” The service offers a bank card with 3% cash back, instant payments, free ATM withdrawals, and other digital banking features. X Money is not a bank; accounts are held at the FDIC-insured Cross River Bank.
Creator payouts will also count toward the direct deposit requirements needed to unlock the service’s higher APY. The X Money website currently lists a boosted 6% rate for X Premium users, compared with a standard 4% rate.
Tax Reporting and Program Overhaul
For tax purposes, X will issue a 1099-NEC to individuals receiving creator payouts. For LLCs, the company will collect W-9 information to ensure accurate 1099 filings.
The payment migration arrives alongside a wider reshaping of X’s creator programs. On September 7, X will retire its Creator Revenue Sharing Program, which stopped accepting new members last month. Affected creators are being moved to the Original Content Rewards Program, which places greater emphasis on original material.
The transition consolidates creator earnings, banking, and tax reporting within a single service. Creators outside the United States remain on Stripe for the time being.
