ChatGPT Health now integrates with Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) system, giving clinicians a new way to import patient data and query it with AI. OpenAI announced the tie-up, which connects to a platform holding records for more than 325 million patients. In select systems, the company said ChatGPT will also run directly inside EHR workflows.
With the integration, clinicians can pull details such as appointment notes, laboratory results, medications, and specialist documentation, then summarize them quickly. They can also review patient history, spot changes over time, and prepare for upcoming visits. In some deployments, clinicians can access ChatGPT for pre-visit review and to build clinical timelines without leaving a patient’s chart.
OpenAI emphasized that the connection provides only read-only access to health records. The AI does not write any information back into the system.
New Healthcare Public Data plug-in
OpenAI is also rolling out a Healthcare Public Data plug-in that draws from sources including ClinicalTrials.gov, CMS Coverage, RxNorm, DailyMed, and PubMed. According to the company, the plug-in can help healthcare workers synthesize information tied to trial eligibility criteria, medication identifiers, coverage policy versions, and provider records.
Beyond these features, organizations with a Business Associate Agreement can now use ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps, and connectors within their workspace to support compliant workflows.
Safety findings and pending lawsuits
Last month, OpenAI opened ChatGPT for health to all U.S. consumers, noting at the time that users submit 300 million health-related queries each week. Despite its expanding ties to medical systems, the company continues to state that AI is not suitable for diagnosis or treatment.
OpenAI said it gathered more than 4,300 responses from physicians across 27 clinical use cases, including pre-visit review, clinical timelines, medication review, and handoff summaries. The company reported that 99.1% of those responses were rated safe, though even a small share of unsafe answers can lead to harmful outcomes.
The rollout follows recent legal challenges. A few days before the announcement, a Florida-based pastor sued the company, alleging that ChatGPT gave him a near-fatal recommendation. In May, family members of a user also sued OpenAI, blaming the chatbot for wrongful advice related to dosage.
Epic’s EHR platform, the backbone of the new integration, currently holds data for over 325 million patients.
