Nvidia’s latest driver update has disabled mVolt+, an open-source overclocking tool that let users push RTX 50-series graphics cards far beyond their standard power limits. Version 615.56 now blocks the app’s core power limit settings, hard crashing the software whenever users attempt to adjust them.
Nvidia’s current-generation Blackwell lineup already ranks among the most powerful graphics cards available, but enthusiast software like mVolt+ pushed that hardware even further. The app allowed owners of RTX 50-series GPUs to raise power limits without any hardware modifications, reaching figures previously reserved for specialized VBIOS flashes or physical PCB mods.
What mVolt+ Did Differently
Unlike mainstream utilities such as MSI Afterburner, mVolt+ bypassed standard driver restrictions to deliver far more granular control over individual hardware blocks. Rather than relying on a single global slider, users could set separate power targets for the core and memory channels, and access voltage and clock offsets for Core, XBAR, SYS, and VRAM. It also enabled manual tuning of power across the interconnect and video encoders.
That flexibility produced dramatic results. Last week, an Asus ROG Astra RTX 5080 reached 680W using mVolt+, even though its official OC BIOS caps out at a 450W TDP. An RTX 5090 owner reported their GPU pulling 650W to 700W while gaming, up from the 450W it previously consumed.
Driver 615.56 Shuts It Down
With driver version 615.56, the core power limit settings introduced in mVolt+ v0.36 no longer function. Attempting to apply extra current now causes the software to black out as if the driver has crashed or been disabled, regardless of how much additional current is applied.
While real-world performance gains from the tool were marginal, mVolt+ still let enthusiasts climb 3DMark’s worldwide rankings purely through software, making its sudden failure a setback for the overclocking community.
Intentional Block or Compatibility Bug?
It remains unclear whether Nvidia deliberately targeted mVolt+ or whether the issue stems from a compatibility conflict with the new driver. Some RTX 5090 users report that their GPUs still accept power limit modifications through Hydra 2.3B Pro, another extreme overclocking utility. That detail suggests mVolt+ was not explicitly blocked, leaving room for its creator, known as b00nz, to release a patch addressing the driver conflict.
