Codex, OpenAI’s agentic coding tool now built into the ChatGPT desktop app, has opened a new season of learning for Mac users in 2026. For those who aren’t programmers, the combination of ChatGPT and Codex is reshaping how everyday tasks and personal projects get built on the Mac.
When ChatGPT first reached early adopters in 2023, chatbots were the novelty. Three years later, Codex represents a comparable shift, extending AI beyond conversation into direct action on the desktop.
How Computer Use changed Codex on the Mac
Codex initially appealed mostly to developers, and writers had little reason to adopt an agentic coding app. That changed in April 2026, when Codex for Mac added a feature called Computer Use. The plugin lets Codex see, click, and type inside Mac apps using its own cursor, allowing an agent to operate applications in the background while the user continues working on the same computer.
The technology has a long lineage. In December 2014, Ari Weinstein and collaborators launched Workflow, an iOS 8 automation app positioned as a friendlier take on OS X Automator for iPhone and iPad. Apple acquired Workflow in March 2017, and with iOS 12 in 2018 it gained deeper system integration and became Apple Shortcuts.
Weinstein and other Workflow veterans later founded Software Applications Incorporated, which previewed Sky, a modern AI assistant for the Mac, before being acquired by OpenAI. Sky never launched publicly. Instead, its underlying technology arrived through Computer Use in Codex for Mac in April 2026.
From ChatGPT to Codex and back again
Trusting an AI to operate your Mac, particularly in the background, requires confidence in the system. The continuity from Workflow to Shortcuts to Codex offered a sense of inherited trust for longtime users of those tools, even those who never became builders themselves with Workflow or Shortcuts.
Codex changed that, though not instantly. A lighthearted feature called Pets served as training wheels, easing the transition for users intimidated by the coding-focused interface. The concept extends to the personal projects that users develop over time.
Daily use of Codex began in May 2026. One early project was a Mac app called Flow, built to monitor app releases and updates and streamline story writing. The task once relied on iTunes on the Mac, which required local iPhone app files that were otherwise unusable, and more recently on iPhone Mirroring.
The broader takeaway is that Codex, paired with ChatGPT, has made app building accessible to non-programmers. What once felt too intimidating to approach now feels essential, to the point that ChatGPT without Codex can feel limited by comparison. Codex daily use began in May 2026, starting with the Flow app.
