Intel is retiring its longstanding “Fellow” designation for its most senior technical staff, a move that reshapes how the chipmaker recognizes its top scientists, researchers, and engineers. According to a notice sent to employees last week, the company will now refer to these experts as Distinguished Engineers. The rebranding does not alter their compensation, but Intel frames it as far more than a cosmetic change.
Under the revised hierarchy, Fellows become Distinguished Engineers, and Senior Fellows become Senior Distinguished Engineers. Intel Chief Technology Officer Pushkar Ranade told staff the shift establishes a new benchmark for technical leadership at the company, one that ties advanced expertise directly to business outcomes.
A New Standard for Technical Leadership
Ranade told employees the change reflects Intel’s updated expectations for its technical luminaries. “The future of Intel will be determined by leaders who combine deep domain expertise with outstanding problem-solving ability, creative innovation with disciplined execution, and an expansive and strategic vision with measurable tactical progress,” he wrote.
In other words, technical brilliance alone is no longer the sole yardstick. Intel now wants its senior specialists to pair deep knowledge with strategic direction and measurable results. Ranade also argued that the new titles align more closely with terminology used broadly across the technology sector.
How the Title Compares Across the Industry
That reasoning is notable given how common the Fellow rank remains among semiconductor firms. At least a dozen companies still use it, including AMD, ASML, Applied Materials, Arm, Broadcom, IBM, Nvidia, Micron, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, and TSMC. Meanwhile, Apple, Google, IBM, and Microsoft use the Distinguished Engineer label. At Google, IBM, and Microsoft, however, Fellows actually rank above Distinguished Engineers, meaning Intel’s new title sits lower in the pecking order used by several major tech peers.
Intel first created the Fellow title in 1980 to honor employees with a sustained record of exceptional technical achievement. The term carried intentionally academic weight. Scientific and engineering organizations have long reserved “Fellow” for their most distinguished members, as seen with the Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) or the IEEE Fellow. By the time chipmakers such as IBM, Texas Instruments, and Intel built formal technical career tracks, the word already signaled an engineer regarded by peers as a leading authority in the field.
What the Change Means for Influence and Resources
Across the semiconductor industry, the Fellow rank typically comes with compensation, resources, and influence on par with a vice president or senior vice president. That structure allows top architects and device physicists to help steer company strategy without moving into people management. It remains unclear whether Intel’s Distinguished Engineers will retain the same level of resources and influence that Fellows held, including access comparable to the VPs and SVPs who report to the CEO.
