A new Google Home update has restored support for several older Chromecast streamers and the Google Home Mini after a faulty release earlier this year partially broke functionality on those devices.
The original Chromecast streaming dongle, launched in 2013, is well over a decade old at this point. While Google has officially dropped software support for that first-generation streamer, it continues to deliver updates and support for other models in the lineup.
What Went Wrong
Trouble first surfaced in May, when support for the first-gen Chromecast appeared to falter within the Google Home app. A fix arrived shortly after, but the reprieve was brief. A fresh wave of reports emerged in late July, this time affecting not only the first-generation Chromecast but also the 2015 model and the Google Home Mini.
The problems primarily disrupted device setup, though functionality was also affected to some extent. Most of the complaints came from users of the Android version of the Google Home app.
The Fix in Version 4.26
Google says the issue is resolved as of Google Home v4.26, which is available now. In a statement shared across multiple Reddit threads, the company confirmed it had addressed the setup problems tied to some older Chromecast and Google Home devices.
Google advised affected users who continue to see issues to factory reset their speaker or update the Google Home app to version 4.26 and try the setup process again.
The update can be downloaded through the Google Play Store, though most users likely already have it installed automatically.
Other Recent Google Home Changes
Google has rolled out several additional updates to the platform in recent months. One change lets users set light color temperature to a specific kelvin value using voice commands. Another added support for viewing third-party cameras from brands including Wyze and Eufy. Separately, Gemini on the Nest Hub redesigned weather and other knowledge answers.
