John Ternus officially became Apple’s chief executive this week, and a fresh profile is now shedding light on the new leader’s background, character, and standing among colleagues and business partners.

Ternus stepped into the role just days ago as Tim Cook transitioned to the position of Executive Chair. While much of Ternus’s professional history has been documented, the new profile adds details about how he is viewed inside the company and beyond.

How Colleagues Describe Apple’s New CEO

Within Apple, Ternus is described as both highly competent and understated. That reputation is echoed by Wendell Weeks, chief executive of longtime Apple glass supplier Corning, who began working with Ternus during the development of the iPad nearly two decades ago.

“It was very obvious from the earliest days that John was super-talented,” Weeks said, describing Ternus as a humble “good guy.” He added that Ternus’s hobby of racing cars may reveal another dimension of his personality. “There are not many non-passionate people that drive race cars,” Weeks noted, adding that success behind the wheel requires being “wicked calm and really dedicated to excellence.”

One former Apple executive characterized Ternus as “relatively unknown outside the hardware organization” at the company. However, the timing of that observation is unclear, as Ternus’s internal visibility appears to have grown considerably over the past year.

A Smooth Leadership Transition

Tim Cook has said Apple “really wanted this transition to be the best,” and internal reaction suggests the handover has gone smoothly. A celebration for Ternus at Apple Park on Tuesday featured a DJ set from Apple Music creative director Zane Lowe.

Not everyone attended, though. One employee said they were already so accustomed to the change in leadership that they felt no need to be there, a sign of just how seamlessly the shift has been absorbed across the company.

What Is Known About Ternus’s Private Life

Ternus keeps a low personal profile, but the new report shares a few details. He is married, has children, and was born and raised in California.

Ternus will make his first public appearance as Apple’s CEO at the company’s iPhone launch event next week, marking his debut on the stage during one of Apple’s most closely watched annual events.
