Apple Vision Pro has reached a new milestone in the operating room. Stryker announced this week that surgeons completed the first surgical procedure using a new medical app built for the headset, marking a significant step for spatial computing in healthcare.
The procedure was a hip arthroscopy, performed with an app called SportSuite Vision. The software brings essential digital content directly into a surgeon’s field of view, including arthroscopic video, HipCheck, HipMap, and CT imaging.
How SportSuite Vision Works in the OR
During arthroscopic operations, surgeons typically rely on multiple monitors placed throughout the operating room to view visualization and procedural data. SportSuite Vision consolidates those data sources into the surgeon’s visual space, allowing physical objects in the OR to appear alongside digital tools.
According to Stryker, the approach can reduce dependence on traditional monitors and support a more streamlined, ergonomic surgical workflow. The app received FDA De Novo authorization on July 17, which Stryker says makes it the first app the FDA has cleared for intraoperative use with Vision Pro.
The hip arthroscopy took place at Duke Health. Orthopedic surgeon Chad Mather III, who performed the operation, said the technology let him customize where key clinical information appeared and access it within the sterile field. He noted this helped create a more comfortable, streamlined operating room setup while keeping needed information in view.
Pfizer Turns to Vision Pro for Oncology
Vision Pro is also finding use beyond the operating table. This week, Pfizer announced it is using the headset to create an immersive experience illustrating its commitment to fight cancer.
The pharmaceutical company collaborated with Groove Jones to build a mixed reality experience aimed at patients, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders. Pfizer said Vision Pro’s ability to blend digital and real worlds offered a fitting way to connect audiences emotionally and showcase its oncology work.
Growing Adoption in Healthcare
These announcements add to a series of examples of Apple’s headset entering medical and clinical environments. The combination of a regulatory clearance and a completed surgery signals that spatial computing is moving from demonstration to practical application in specialized professional settings.
SportSuite Vision’s FDA De Novo authorization on July 17 established the first regulatory path for using Vision Pro during live surgical procedures.
