Apple TV has released the first trailer for Being Heumann, a new original film from director Siân Heder that the streamer is positioning as an awards-season contender. The movie arrives on the service November 13, 2026, following a limited theatrical run one week earlier.
The project marks a reunion of sorts for Apple and Heder, whose previous film helped make history for the company. Her latest work draws on a real chapter of American civil rights activism and features a cast that includes Ruth Madeley and Mark Ruffalo.
A director with an Oscar pedigree
Heder’s last project was CODA, which won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. That victory made Apple TV the first streaming service to claim the top Oscar, edging out Netflix. Apple is clearly hoping to repeat that success with Being Heumann, and the newly released trailer frames the film squarely as an awards candidate.
Based on true events, the film follows a young disabled woman played by Ruth Madeley who, in 1977, joins a coalition of outsiders in occupying a federal building. What starts as one impulsive act becomes the longest occupation of a federal building in American history, as hundreds seize government offices and refuse to leave until a bureaucrat, played by Mark Ruffalo, takes action. The story centers on a movement’s accidental leaders as they push for change on behalf of millions.
More Apple TV originals on the way
Being Heumann is one of several original films heading to Apple TV in the coming weeks. Others include Ryan Reynolds’ Mayday, premiering later this week, John Cena’s Matchbox the Movie, and fellow Oscar contender Tenzing. The streamer also recently expanded its catalog with a batch of classic movies.
Apple TV is available for EUR 13 per month, and subscribers can also access the service at a discount through the Apple One bundle. The limited theatrical release of Being Heumann is set for one week ahead of its November 13 streaming debut.
