New AirPods are already generating buzz, even as Apple’s current lineup stands as one of its strongest yet. AirPods 5 and Camera-Equipped AirPods
According to Bloomberg, Apple is expected to announce AirPods 5 at its upcoming “Surprise and shine” event, where the company will also introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra. Following the pattern set by the AirPods 4, the new model is anticipated to arrive in two configurations: one with Active Noise Cancellation and one without. Specific new features have not yet been detailed.
The most significant shift in Apple’s roadmap is a version of AirPods with built-in cameras. Each earbud, both left and right, would house a camera. These cameras are not intended for photo or video capture. Instead, they would work alongside Siri to interpret your surroundings, functioning as what Bloomberg has called “the eyes” for the assistant.
In practice, that could mean asking your AirPods for dinner suggestions or nutritional details while looking at food ingredients. The feature may also tie into iPhone apps such as Reminders and Maps to add environmental awareness. Design-wise, the cameras are expected to require longer stems than the standard AirPods Pro, along with a small LED that activates automatically whenever the cameras are gathering data.
Originally targeted for a 2026 launch, the camera-equipped AirPods have reportedly slipped to late 2027 due to delays tied to Apple Intelligence and Siri development.
AirPods Max Updates and Buying Advice
Apple refreshed the AirPods Max earlier this year with the H2 chip, a new high-dynamic range amplifier, and improved audio quality. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously reported that Apple was developing a lighter AirPods Max model for 2027, though it remains unclear whether that refresh is still planned.
For shoppers weighing a purchase now, the timing depends on the model. Anyone considering the AirPods 4 may want to wait to see what the AirPods 5 offer at the upcoming event. Buyers eyeing the AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max, however, have less reason to hold off.
The AirPods Pro 3 launched last fall with a revamped in-ear fit, improved sound quality, and a built-in heart rate monitor. Apple released the AirPods 4 in two variants, with and without Active Noise Cancellation, in November 2024.
