Microsoft has announced a new Xbox disc-to-digital program that lets players convert their physical games into digital copies. The feature bridges a long-standing divide between the convenience of digital downloads and the permanence of physical discs, and it will cover thousands of supported titles across the Xbox library.

Testing begins for Xbox Insiders on August 31. Once live, players can claim a “digital entitlement” for most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games by inserting the disc into a console and launching the title. After that, the game becomes fully playable in digital form, with no need to insert the disc again, as long as the owner or a member of their family account is signed in.

How the Digital Entitlement Works

Beyond removing the need for the disc, the digital entitlement also unlocks additional features for supported titles. These include Xbox Play Anywhere for playing on PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming for streaming. Microsoft says the physical disc will continue to work exactly as it always has after the entitlement is claimed.

There is an important limit, however. Each disc carries only one revocable license per game. That means selling or lending a disc could transfer the digital entitlement to a new account when someone else inserts it into their console.

Not every game qualifies at launch. A leaked memo reported earlier this month indicates that publishers must actively opt in to allow their discs to activate digital entitlements, which helps explain why only most Xbox One and Series X titles are supported. Separate reporting suggests some discs may be incompatible due to how they were manufactured, a possible reason original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs are not part of the program.

Why the Move Matters

The ability to convert disc-based Xbox games into digital copies could take on added significance given rumors that Microsoft’s upcoming Project Helix console may ship without a disc drive. In that scenario, claiming a digital entitlement could become the primary path to backward compatibility for hundreds of millions of existing Xbox game discs.

“While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come,” Xbox Vice President Jason Ronald said in the announcement. Microsoft plans to start with thousands of titles and expand the list over time.

The timing stands out in the broader console market. Sony has announced it will stop producing physical discs entirely in 2028, though earlier rumors point to an optional, detachable disc drive for PlayStation 6 owners who want backward compatibility for their physical titles. It remains unclear whether Sony would be willing or technically able to offer a similar disc-to-digital option for PlayStation games.
