A Boston Scientific cyberattack is causing an ongoing “global disruption” to the medical device maker’s operations, according to a federal regulatory filing submitted this week. The incident marks the latest in a string of security breaches to hit major health technology companies in recent weeks.
The Massachusetts-based company, known for medically implanted devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators, confirmed the situation in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. According to the disclosure, the firm began experiencing “disruptions and limitations of access” to IT systems and business applications critical to its operations on Tuesday.
What Boston Scientific Has Confirmed
The company said the cyberattack has affected its ability to ship and process orders. It has not indicated whether the disruption extends to customers who already rely on its medical devices and implants. Boston Scientific stated that its investigation remains ongoing and that a timeline for restoring its systems has not yet been established.
A company spokesperson provided the public statement but declined to comment on whether patients are affected, what steps patients should take, or the nature of the incident. Boston Scientific treats roughly 48 million patients a year, according to its website.
The cause of the breach has not been made clear. Local reports in Ireland indicated that thousands of staff across the company’s Cork campus were sent home on Tuesday after network communications were cut across the organization.
A Wider Wave of Health Tech Breaches
Boston Scientific joins a growing list of health technology firms targeted by hackers this year, including fellow medical device makers Abbott Laboratories and Medtronic. Earlier in 2026, Iranian-backed hackers were blamed for a cyberattack on U.S. medical device maker Stryker. That intrusion allowed attackers to remotely wipe tens of thousands of employee devices across the company’s Windows network by abusing a centralized device management portal provided by Microsoft.
According to public internet records, Boston Scientific relies largely on Microsoft and Amazon Web Services for its corporate infrastructure, underscoring how deeply cloud platforms are woven into the operations of modern medical device manufacturers.
The pattern of attacks on device makers raises significant concerns for a sector responsible for equipment that patients depend on daily. As of the regulatory filing, Boston Scientific had not disclosed the identity of the attackers or confirmed whether any data was accessed or stolen during the incident.
