Tottenham Hotspur has cut its stadium licensing fees by more than 85 percent after replacing its VMware deployment with Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Morpheus VM Essentials (VME) virtualization software. The English Premier League soccer club confirmed the switch this week, though it did not reveal which VMware products it previously used or how much it had been paying Broadcom, the company that now owns VMware.
The organization has moved its stadium’s server, storage, and networking infrastructure to HPE solutions delivered through GreenLake, HPE’s hybrid cloud management platform. According to Rob Pickering, Tottenham’s chief technology officer, the setup is underpinned by VME and HPE’s OpsRamp software for hybrid and multi-cloud environments, with HPE managing the hybrid cloud service.
A modernized data center at the stadium
Tottenham is nearing completion of a broader redesign of its stadium data center and network infrastructure. The facility houses a data center with six aisles running HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 server hardware and Alletra Storage MP. HPE said the club is using its Morpheus and OpsRamp software to manage a complex, multi-site environment more efficiently while modernizing virtualization platforms and reducing operational overhead.
Pickering said the timing aligned with the club’s hardware replacement cycles, giving the team a natural decision point to evaluate alternatives. He described the hypervisor market as long dominated by VMware, which he characterized as a major player that made decisions running counter to the interests of both system integrators and customers.
Why the migration went beyond cost
Pickering said Morpheus VME’s ability to perform tasks on behalf of the hardware far outstrips what VMware can do, calling the platform more capable in many respects. Still, savings were a central factor. The club is saving north of 85 percent in licensing fees compared with its VMware setup. The migration took place over roughly three months as the new infrastructure was installed.
Pickering pointed to the well-known commercial changes tied to Broadcom’s takeover of VMware, including shifts in pricing structure and client engagement, as part of the reason for moving on. But he framed the decision as more than a vendor swap. He argued that virtualization delivers less value when it is not built into a broader AI operations stack.
Connecting the infrastructure to a single operational stack that the team can manage from one pane of glass is worth more than the savings alone, Pickering said, describing it as part of a wider effort to put AI operations at the heart of the club’s technology strategy. In 2025, he noted that Tottenham operated with a total technology team of about 35 people, making the ability to use AI operations to proactively detect and remediate faults without manual input especially valuable for a group of that size.
