The Tesla Cybercab is set to launch in Austin, Texas, marking what could become a defining moment for the automaker’s ambitions in artificial intelligence and autonomous transportation. The Cybercab is a small, gold, two-seater sedan built without a steering wheel or pedals, relying on cameras and AI to navigate.
Tesla has not detailed exactly what the launch will involve. It could range from a handful of vehicles offering rides in a limited downtown area to a much larger deployment across the city. In the days leading up to the event, Tesla positioned dozens of Cybercabs around Austin and in several other U.S. cities. At the time of reporting, 420 autonomous vehicles were registered in Texas, according to the state’s automated vehicle tracker.
A Shift in Messaging
Ashok Elluswamy, the head of Tesla AI, wrote on X that the “streets won’t be the same anymore.” When another user commented that Tesla was “about to flood Austin,” CEO Elon Musk replied, “Yes.” Musk also posted a seemingly AI-generated image of the Cybercab overtaking the city amid a large dust storm, adding the caption “A Storm of Cybercabs.”
This tone represents a shift from the company’s earlier go-slow-and-safe stance. In prior months, Musk and other executives had emphasized a cautious approach to robotaxis in the name of safety, though at times their focus appeared tied to public perception of a potential failure.
More Than a Launch Strategy
The outcome matters more than the rollout itself. Tesla’s ability to successfully operate a robotaxi network around the Cybercab would offer the first tangible proof that it has evolved from an automaker with side projects into an AI and robotics company.
Musk first revealed the Cybercab in 2024 at a Hollywood movie lot, but the concept dates back much further. For more than a decade, Musk has promised that Tesla would make its cars fully autonomous, laying the groundwork for a robotaxi fleet. In 2016, he claimed that every Tesla being produced already had the hardware needed to become fully autonomous, requiring only the right software update.
That claim proved inaccurate. Tesla has reworked the hardware in its vehicles multiple times since then, and Musk recently acknowledged that millions of those cars will not be capable of full autonomy without further changes.
A Tesla robotaxi has already been photographed operating in Austin, Texas, as the company moves forward with its test deployment.
