iRobot revealed one of the more unusual ideas in home cleaning at IFA Berlin: the Roomba Duo, a floor-washing robot that carries and deploys a smaller Roomba using a top-mounted mechanical arm. Seen in action at the company’s booth, the Duo is a concept device rather than a product headed to store shelves, but it signals the direction iRobot is exploring to solve everyday cleaning problems.
According to Adam Pope, iRobot’s chief engineer, the Duo pairs two machines that work together. The main egg-shaped “mothership” module houses a powerful floor washer and steamer with cleaning performance the company compares to a traditional wet-and-dry vacuum. That power comes with a trade-off: the larger unit is strong but not as nimble or autonomous as a standard robot vacuum.
How the Roomba Duo Deploys a Second Robot
To fill that gap, the Duo carries a slim Roomba that it can lower to the floor. In a live demonstration, the main unit vacuumed spilled spaghetti from carpet and sanitized the area, then used its industrial-looking mechanical arm and a small landing-craft platform to set the smaller Roomba down. The slim robot then cleaned narrow spots along an obstacle course while the larger unit returned toward its dock. iRobot says the sturdy arm is necessary to maintain stability under the extra weight.
Both machines run autonomously but share a single home map and an autonomous mobile dock, so they avoid duplicating work. They communicate in real time and connect through the Roomba Home app, which uses AI to coordinate tasks. The mothership handles large, open floor areas, while the compact Roomba reaches under furniture and into tight spaces the bigger module cannot access.
Specs Behind the Concept
Although the Duo has no confirmed release, iRobot shared several technical details. The main unit features a wet-and-dry floor-washing module, a high-performance motor, and a high-capacity battery. It relies on the company’s PowerSpin Max Roller, which applies 46 newtons of downward pressure, a significant increase over the 12 to 14 newtons typical of most robot vacuums. iRobot says this level of force scrubs floors as thoroughly as cleaning by hand.
An internal heater produces steam to loosen dried-on grime and stains, and the roller is self-cleaning, handling dirt, pasta sauce, and cooking grease. A hot-air dryer positioned behind the roller dries the floor after mopping to help protect wood flooring from moisture damage.
The companion robot used in the IFA demonstration was the Roomba Plus 575 Combo.
