Google Gemini is once again in the spotlight after three hikers were rescued from California’s Mount Shasta this week, having relied on the AI chatbot to plan their expedition. The incident highlights growing concerns about using generative AI tools for high-stakes outdoor planning.
According to the Siskiyou County sheriff’s office, the three young men began their climb at 3 a.m. Hikers on Mount Shasta are typically advised to turn back if they have not reached the summit by noon, but the trio pressed on and did not reach the top until 7 p.m.
A Descent That Turned Into a Multiday Ordeal
With daylight gone, the group attempted to descend in the dark. They eventually called the sheriff’s office asking for directions and spent the night in Mud Creek Canyon. The following morning, they were rescued by Forest Service rangers and volunteers.
It remains unclear how much responsibility Gemini bears for the chain of poor decisions. However, the sheriff’s office noted that the hikers “were advised by Gemini to bring far less food and water than their group required, especially when their planned 8-hour ascent became a multiday ordeal.”
Officials Warn Against Relying Solely on AI
The episode underscores the risks of trusting an AI chatbot for critical trip logistics. Authorities emphasized that AI tools should never be the only source used when preparing for a demanding climb.
“It is always advisable to call the local USFS Mount Shasta ranger station ahead of your trip to ensure you have the most accurate information, and to never rely solely on AI for your trip planning,” the sheriff’s office said.
Mount Shasta, one of the tallest peaks in the Cascade Range, presents challenging conditions that demand careful preparation. The recommended noon turnaround guideline exists specifically to give climbers enough daylight to return safely, a rule the group bypassed by roughly seven hours.
The three hikers were recovered the morning after their overnight stay in Mud Creek Canyon.
