Build American AI, a new pro-AI advocacy group, is preparing to flood voters in key battleground states with advertising that promotes the benefits of building data centers, according to multiple reports. The organization says it is affiliated with Leading the Future (LTF), a super political action committee financed largely by venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, along with OpenAI President Greg Brockman.
The group aims to persuade citizens that hosting data centers in their communities is a positive development. Its stated goal is to counter the growing skepticism surrounding these facilities, which has become a defining issue in several statewide races heading into the 2026 midterms.
Where the Ads Will Run
Build American AI told Bloomberg it will concentrate its spending on Kansas, Ohio, and Wisconsin, three states where debates over data centers have moved to the center of election campaigns. The group described its ad budget as being in the millions of dollars, though it did not disclose a precise figure.
The effort builds on the political muscle of LTF, which launched with more than EUR 43 million in funding. According to Politico, the super PAC has mostly used that money to donate directly to candidates who champion artificial intelligence, while also working to oppose politicians who lobby against the technology.
OpenAI Distances Itself From LTF
LTF has become a prominent and controversial player in AI-related election politics. In a June blog post, OpenAI publicly separated itself from the group, noting that support came from its president and co-founder Greg Brockman and his wife Anna, rather than the company itself.
“OpenAI does not direct the activities of LTF, or have visibility into their operations,” the company wrote. It also criticized certain campaign tactics, stating that AI advocacy groups should “be clear about their policy views, be honest about whom they represent, and not use tactics like astroturfing that obscure the real choices facing policymakers and the public.” Astroturfing refers to disguising a paid, organized campaign as authentic grassroots support.
LTF is not the only well-funded super PAC pushing an AI agenda. Anthropic is a known backer of Public First Action, a group that supports AI regulation, positioning itself in contrast to organizations lobbying against oversight.
A Growing Political Spending Machine
Andreessen and Horowitz have emerged as major forces in campaign finance. Their venture firm, Andreessen Horowitz, ranks as the largest disclosed donor so far in the midterm cycle, outspending high-profile names such as Elon Musk and George Soros. The firm has distributed more than EUR 99 million in disclosed federal contributions.
Beyond LTF and broader AI causes, the firm is also heavily funding pro-crypto initiatives, particularly through the crypto super PAC Fairshake.
