Andreessen Horowitz, widely known as a16z, has expanded its fifth growth fund to EUR 7 billion, adding roughly EUR 2 billion since the vehicle first launched in January with EUR 6 billion. The increase underscores how much capital top venture firms are now deploying into late-stage startups amid the ongoing AI boom.

The update arrives just days after the firm closed a separate EUR 1 billion vehicle it calls the Machine Age Fund. That fund’s steampunk-inspired name signals its focus on AI hardware startups building chips, memory, networking, and storage technologies.

Where the Growth Fund Money Goes

As the name suggests, the growth fund targets growth-stage startups that are scaling products, entering new markets, and expanding operations. Over the past seven years, the fund has backed more than 100 companies, according to David George, the general partner who leads the growth investment team.

George noted that in the current AI era, companies are reaching the growth stage faster than before, while consuming more capital at higher valuations than in previous cycles. That dynamic helps explain why a16z continues to enlarge its available war chest.

Broad Investment Targets Across the Stack

With this expanded capital, a16z is pursuing a wide range of sectors, including enterprise and consumer AI technology, defense tech, robotics, infrastructure hardware and software, and health tech. The firm is effectively investing across the entire technology stack rather than concentrating on a single category.

During this election year, a16z is also directing significant spending toward politics and lobbying, reflecting its growing involvement in policy matters that affect the tech sector.

Building on a January Fundraising Push

The latest expansion follows the EUR 13 billion in new funding a16z announced in January. At that point, the firm reported EUR 78 billion of assets under management, cementing its position as one of the most heavily capitalized venture firms in the industry.

Together, the growth fund expansion and the Machine Age Fund reflect a broader strategy to secure large pools of capital as valuations climb and startups scale more quickly. The fifth growth fund now stands at EUR 7 billion.
