The 2026 Ig Nobel Prize winners have been announced, spotlighting research that ranges from the design of a splash-free urinal to the aerodynamics of a healthy nose-blow. As in past years, the awards celebrate scientific work that first sparks laughter and then invites deeper reflection.

Among this year’s honored studies are efforts to design the perfect splash-free urinal, the use of mosquito proboscises to “necroprint” tiny nozzles, an examination of the decomposition rates of buried cotton underwear, and an analysis of the aerodynamics involved in a healthy nose-blow.

What the Ig Nobel Prizes Recognize

Established in 1991, the Ig Nobels serve as a good-natured parody of the traditional Nobel Prizes. Their stated goal is to honor “achievements that first make people laugh and then make them think.” While the research may appear absurd on the surface, that does not mean it lacks genuine scientific value.

Inside the Awards Ceremony

The ceremony leans into its campy reputation with a lineup that includes miniature operas, live scientific demonstrations, and the signature “24/7 lectures.” In this format, experts must explain their work twice: first in 24 seconds, and then again in just seven words.

Acceptance speeches face strict limits as well, capped at 60 seconds each. The compressed format reinforces the event’s blend of humor and substance, keeping the focus on ideas rather than lengthy remarks.

Where to Learn More

In the weeks following the ceremony, the winners will deliver free public talks explaining their research in greater detail. Those talks will be posted on the Improbable Research website, giving audiences a chance to explore the science behind each award-winning project.
