Donkey Kong 64 now has a fully native PC port, giving fans a way to play the Nintendo 64 classic without relying on emulation. The project, called DK64: ReKONGpiled, was built by a group of veteran programmers who recompiled the original N64 code into C, allowing modern hardware to run the game directly at the engine level.

To play, you supply your own legally acquired ROM. Once loaded, the port runs the title without any emulation overhead, unlocking a wide range of enhancements while keeping the original experience intact.

How the Port Was Built

DK64: ReKONGpiled relies on the open-source N64: Recompiled framework from Wiseguy and renders through RT64. The developers behind it, Rainchus, Ballaam, Killklli, 2dos, and Umedtakes, are the same team known for the DK64 Randomizer. Their approach takes N64 machine code that was never intended for current systems, reverse-engineers it, and recompiles it into C, a language that both x86 and ARM machines understand natively.

Because of that method, the port is available across Windows, Linux, and Mac. The team has also emphasized that the entire project was completed without any generative AI, publicly contrasting their work with competing efforts built through so-called vibecoding.

Features and Improvements

The release adds true high-resolution support, including ultrawide and other aspect ratios, along with uncapped framerates that do not speed up the game. Controls are mapped for keyboard and mouse as well as controllers, and players get quality-of-life additions such as near-zero latency, near-instant load times, cutscene skipping, improved camera controls, and the ability to switch between characters at any time.

Everything else stays faithful to the source. The art style and low-poly 3D graphics remain untouched, and the audio is preserved. The main additions are practical ones, including an in-game menu that lets you adjust settings on the fly, such as draw distance, and save or load states. Mod and multiplayer support are also built in.

Real-World Performance

No game assets are bundled with the download, so a ROM is required. In testing, the executable was obtained from GitHub and paired with a ROM to run the game. It performed without issues and switched in real time between a keyboard and mouse and a 2.4 GHz wireless controller, behaving like a modern release.

Everything scaled cleanly, the game ran smoothly, and cutscenes rendered in ultrawide resolution inside a 16:9 window rather than fullscreen. The result is a native, low-latency version of a Nintendo 64 favorite that runs on current PCs without emulation and without any AI-generated code.
