The Mammotion Luba 3 is a robot lawnmower that stands apart from the competition thanks to its navigation system, and after several weeks of hands-on use, it addressed the biggest concern many buyers have with automated mowers.

Robot lawnmowers have intrigued shoppers for years, yet the setup and maintenance often felt like more trouble than the convenience was worth. The Luba 3 AWD model changes that perception, largely because of how it operates and how reliably it stays on task.

NetRTK Navigation Sets It Apart

Unlike many rivals that rely on a physical boundary perimeter or an RTK base station, the Luba 3 uses a system called NetRTK. This combines a highly accurate satellite positioning system with LiDAR to keep the mower within its assigned areas.

The accuracy proved impressive. After mapping the target areas of a yard, the mower stayed almost perfectly within the set boundaries. A generous buffer zone initially placed between the mower and a busy road turned out to be unnecessary, since the machine hit its lines with enough precision to allow those boundaries to be moved much closer to the street.

The system is not flawless. A section of yard with a ditch left the mower stuck a couple of times when positioning drifted by a few inches, and a hard-to-reach part of the property also posed problems. In most cases, however, the mower completed its runs without issue.

App Control and Easy Setup

Everything is managed through the companion app, where a virtual joystick lets users build a map and define pathways between zones, including routes across driveways or portions of a neighbor’s lawn. The app also handles scheduling, progress tracking, and a first-person-view feed from the mower’s main camera during operation.

Initial setup is straightforward. Assembly took roughly 30 minutes, with the included tools making it simple to attach the front bumper and side covers. The docking station only needs a nearby power outlet, and a generous length of cable is included.

A fairly level surface is recommended for the dock, though a slightly uneven mulch base worked well enough in testing. Over several weeks, the mower failed to seat properly for charging on only one occasion. A physical RTK base station is included in the box, but it is unnecessary in most situations.

Hardware and Safety

Like most robot mowers, the Luba 3 cuts grass using small blades underneath the unit, which also contributes to a greater sense of safety. A large STOP button sits on top of the machine, and the compact blades are far less capable of causing damage than a traditional mower.

The physical hardware is substantial, easily two to three times the size of a comparable model. The docking station arrives in the box and requires only access to a power source within reach of the included cabling.
