The M6 MacBook Pro is set to arrive this fall, bringing meaningful performance and efficiency gains to Apple’s popular laptop. Now that the M6 chip has been officially revealed, the shape of the upcoming refresh is coming into focus. The new model keeps the current industrial design and features a 14-inch display, while introducing three notable improvements powered by Apple’s latest silicon.

A Dual 16-Core Neural Engine for Faster On-Device AI

For anyone whose workflow leans on artificial intelligence, the M6 could represent a significant step up. That relevance grows with macOS 27, which puts AI features in front of more users than ever before.

The M6 chip includes a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, a jump from the single 16-core version found in the M5 and earlier generations. According to Apple, the design delivers up to twice the peak compute of previous generations, accelerating on-device AI tasks. System frameworks can tap both engines at the same time, allowing apps to run models faster automatically.

12-Core CPU and GPU With a New Three-Core Design

The base M6 chip pairs a 12-core CPU with a 12-core GPU, up from the 10 cores each offered by the M5. The processor design is especially noteworthy, as Apple is bringing three distinct core types to its entry-level chip for the first time.

The layout consists of 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores. Apple describes the super cores as built to blaze through single-threaded workloads, while the performance cores draw less power and combine with the super cores to handle demanding multithreaded tasks. The efficiency cores manage everyday background work.

Until now, only the M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra combined super cores and performance cores in a single chip. With the M6, those Pro-level capabilities reach standard configurations.

A 2nm Process Aimed at Better Efficiency

The M6 is Apple’s first chip built on a new 2nm process, which the company credits with a major leap in both performance and power efficiency. At present, the only shipping product with an M6 is the new Mac mini, which does not run on a battery.

In the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and other forthcoming M6 devices, that efficiency improvement could translate into longer battery life. Apple could alternatively reduce the physical battery size while maintaining comparable runtime, though the efficiency gains leave room for extended endurance instead.

The 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro is expected to launch this fall.
