Apple home security is reportedly moving beyond hardware. According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is developing a dedicated home security and monitoring service slated to arrive in 2027, expanding its ambitions in the connected home well past the wave of devices expected to launch soon.
The service would complement a broad refresh of Apple’s Home lineup. A new Apple TV 4K, an updated HomePod mini, and a home hub often referred to as the HomePad are all expected to debut in the near term, marking one of the most significant overhauls of the category in years.
A Privacy-Focused Security Camera
Central to the 2027 plans is an in-home security sensor and system. Gurman describes it as a privacy-centric home security camera and automation device that relies on artificial intelligence to monitor its surroundings rather than capturing traditional video footage. That approach reflects Apple’s emphasis on user privacy across its product categories.
The device is designed to connect directly to the new home security and monitoring service, according to the report. That detail signals Apple’s intent to pair its hardware with an ongoing, likely subscription-based offering rather than selling a standalone gadget.
A New Revenue Stream for Services
Home security and monitoring represents a large market with meaningful potential to add to Apple’s growing services business. A paid tier could also be folded into Apple One, giving the bundle added value and helping the company retain subscribers over time.
The report suggests the security sensor may be only the starting point for a wider push into the smart home. A subscription component indicates Apple is preparing to treat the category as a long-term priority, potentially opening the door to additional connected products in the years ahead.
Gurman has previously pointed to Apple’s interest in the home security space, but the latest report is the first to outline a formal service alongside the hardware. Both the sensor and the accompanying service are positioned for a 2027 release.
