The Apple M6 chip has arrived, making its first appearance in the new Mac mini. Among its notable upgrades, the M6 introduces a feature that was previously reserved for higher-end silicon such as the M5 Pro and M5 Max.
M6 Brings Super Cores to a Base Chip for the First Time
Apple silicon continues to move forward, and this week delivered two new arrivals: the M6 and the M5 Ultra. Each brings something distinct. The M5 Ultra debuts Apple’s first quad-die architecture, while the M6 is the company’s first chip built on a 2-nanometer process.
The M6 also gains a Pro-level enhancement in its CPU core makeup. It ships with 12 cores in total: 2 super cores, 4 performance cores, and 6 efficiency cores. That combination marks a first for a base Apple chip.
Understanding Apple’s Revised Core Naming
For years, Apple’s chips carried only two core types: performance and efficiency. That approach shifted earlier in the year with the arrival of the M5 Pro and M5 Max. Apple rebranded its former performance cores as super cores, then added a brand-new core type that took over the performance label.
The super cores are Apple’s most powerful CPU cores and were previously known as performance cores before the rename. The new performance cores now sit in the middle tier of the architecture, balancing power efficiency with multi-threaded output. This performance core design first appeared with the M5 Pro and M5 Max.
Why the M6 Stands Out This Year
Until this week, the M5 Pro and M5 Max were the only way to get both super cores and performance cores in a single chip. Now the M5 Ultra and the base M6 also carry Apple’s two most powerful CPU core types. That expansion is a key reason the base M6 represents a significant year-over-year step up.
The M6 makes its first appearance in the newly released Mac mini.
