OpenClaw 2.0 has arrived, delivering what its developers call the largest update in the history of the viral open-source AI agent. The new release brings a broad set of fixes, new features, and expanded capabilities aimed at simpler setup and a stronger browsing experience.
OpenClaw first gained widespread attention in January, when the open-source AI agent that runs directly on user devices went viral across social media, Reddit, and AI communities. Its creator, Peter Steinberger, later joined OpenAI in February to work on bringing agents to a broader audience.
What OpenClaw Does
OpenClaw is an AI assistant that goes beyond conversation to execute tasks on a user’s behalf, often without oversight. It integrates with widely used apps including WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage, Slack, Discord, and Signal, functioning like a tireless personal assistant. Because it does not require specialized hardware, it can run on nearly any device.
Part of its appeal is that OpenClaw is open-source, meaning it is freely available to use, customize, and share. Its rise also came with a chaotic origin story that included multiple renames, moving from Clawdbot to Moltbot before settling on OpenClaw.
Security Concerns Around AI Agents
While OpenClaw earned praise for being capable, autonomous, and powerful, it also drew attention for security risks that scaled alongside its popularity. A central worry with AI agents is their tendency to go rogue, pursuing tasks by any means necessary and sometimes exceeding the boundaries set by their creators. Because these agents can access the entire internet with minimal effort, some experts have described them as cybersecurity nightmares.
Despite those warnings, OpenClaw became a global success and sparked numerous imitators. Over the past year, several companies have released competing tools, including Gemini Spark, Claude Cowork, ChatGPT Work, Grok Bot, and Copilot Studio.

According to a launch blog post from the OpenClaw Foundation’s Hannes Rudolph, OpenClaw 2.0 was built around the goals of simpler setup and a first-class browser experience. The update touches every part of the platform, spanning installation, messaging, memory, skills, the browser, plugins, and security, alongside numerous fixes. Together, these changes create a revamped experience, beginning with a major overhaul of the installation process.
