The remaining four words filled the purple category, grouped with terms that aren’t actual dogs at all. That group mixed a food (corn dog), an animal (prairie dog), and two slang expressions (salty dog and top dog).
Players React on Reddit
Frustration spilled onto Reddit, where players vented about the overlap. “I was like, ‘there’s 7 answers???'” one user wrote before realizing some entries were literal dogs and others were not. Another admitted their post-loss Google search was “TF is a sausage dog.”
The term sausage dog proved especially divisive for U.S. players, many of whom know the dachshund breed as a “wiener dog” instead. Several Reddit users noted that “sausage dog” is more commonly used in Australia and the United Kingdom, and fans of the Australian animated series Bluey may recognize it from the show.
Some commenters said the puzzle rewarded players who “presolve,” meaning you can’t simply guess at four similar words and hope for the best. Instead, solvers needed to map out all 16 words before committing to any single category.
With so much overlap packed into one grid, the September 2, 2026 puzzle likely ended more than a few Connections winning streaks.
