Microsoft Project Zenith is the company’s newly named developer-optimized Windows experience, built for a fresh class of hardware aimed squarely at software builders. The initiative expands on a developer-focused Windows effort Microsoft first introduced at its Build conference earlier this year, but it now targets machines equipped with 64GB or more of unified memory.
According to Logan Iyer, CVP of Windows platform and developer at Microsoft, Project Zenith devices ship with a Windows setup preconfigured for development and a curated selection of tools that developers tend to reach for first. On these systems, developers can run 30B-plus parameter models locally and unmetered, which speeds up experimentation while cutting reliance on metered cloud tokens.
First Project Zenith hardware arrives
AMD revealed the first Project Zenith device during its IFA presentation, a miniature PC powered by Ryzen AI Halo chips. Microsoft says additional Project Zenith machines will follow in the coming months, including models built on different silicon.
The hardware push signals a broader effort to give developers dedicated Windows systems tuned for on-device AI workloads rather than cloud-based processing.
Preconfigured tools and a cleaner setup
Each Project Zenith device comes with pre-installed developer tools, including Visual Studio Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerToys, WinAppCLI, and Windows Dev Skills. File Explorer has been adjusted to display file extensions, hidden files, and the full path in the title bar. Microsoft has also enabled long-path support out of the box.
Several default distractions have been switched off. Microsoft has disabled recently used files and folders, sync provider tips, Start menu tips, and account notifications. The PowerToys Command Palette is enabled by default, giving developers faster access to common actions.
A developer-focused push for Windows 11
Project Zenith is the developer-side component of Microsoft’s ongoing work to refine Windows 11 throughout the year. Many of the changes, particularly those that strip away interface clutter, mirror requests developers have long made of the operating system.
Iyer described the project as the outcome of listening to developers about what they need from Windows today and where they want the platform to head next. He added that as AI continues to reshape software development, Microsoft is committed to evolving Windows alongside the community building on it. AMD’s Ryzen AI Halo-powered miniature PC is the first Project Zenith device available.
