The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 has arrived, and the most noticeable improvements come from subtle design changes rather than headline specifications. The handset is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, and a small refinement to the frame makes it easier to open in everyday use.
This year’s signature colour is pink, a shade not previously chosen for a Samsung flagship, signalling a clear positioning decision. Other colour options remain available, but the pink finish stands out as the defining look of the device.
A thinner, lighter foldable
Rather than sweeping hardware overhauls, the Flip 8 focuses on refinement. It weighs 180 grams, down from the 188 grams of the Flip 7. When unfolded it measures just 6.1mm thick, and when closed it comes in at 13.1mm. That compares with 6.5mm and 13.7mm on the previous generation.
The most meaningful change comes from the sides of the phone. They remain flat but are now slightly tapered, making the device noticeably easier to unfold. For a handset opened and closed dozens of times a day, that adjustment carries real weight. The crease has also improved and is now less noticeable.
The Flip 8 retains the 6.9-inch main display, taller than a typical non-folding smartphone thanks to its 21:9 aspect ratio.
Cameras, software and battery
The camera setup is familiar, pairing a 50MP main sensor with a 12MP ultra-wide. Image quality has changed little, suggesting Flip devices have reached something of a plateau in this area.
A handful of new features do arrive. Horizontal Lock provides strong video stabilisation, keeping the horizon steady even if the camera is rotated a full 360 degrees. My FanCam lets users film a group activity such as a dance, then select a single performer, with the video cropping to follow that individual.
The device runs One UI 9 on top of Android 17. Users now have greater control over the cover screen without relying on Good Lock modules, and can select which apps appear there while creating custom cards and layouts. Gemini serves as the main assistant, accessed by long pressing the power button.
Battery life and charging remain unchanged from the previous Flip. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is priced higher than its predecessor this year, in line with wider trends across the technology market.
