Acer’s Project DualPlay Mini is a new concept that reimagines what a Windows gaming handheld can be, blending the portability of a handheld with the practicality of an ultralight laptop. While handhelds are usually viewed as gaming-first machines, they share far more with lightweight notebooks than many users realize. They run Windows, include a built-in display, and rely on mobile processors with integrated graphics to deliver comparable performance.
With prices climbing for both handhelds and traditional computers, gamers increasingly see these devices as appealing all-purpose options. The catch has always been input: playing with a keyboard and mouse, or handling everyday computing tasks, typically means dealing with the hassle of connecting external peripherals or staying tethered to a dock.
A Transforming Approach to Handheld Design
The Project DualPlay Mini concept tackles this problem with a shape-shifting design. It functions as a clamshell laptop, with speakers positioned on either side of the display. The 8-inch screen flips up, while the grips sit on the back of the speakers, so folding it closed converts the device into a traditional handheld.
You would still need to connect a mouse, but the built-in keyboard resolves the most awkward part of the setup. As with similar devices, you can also link it to an external monitor and other peripherals.
The nearest comparison in the current market is Lenovo’s Legion Go series, though its multipurpose appeal largely comes down to a built-in kickstand that makes desktop use easier. Acer’s concept aims to go further with its convertible form factor.
Chips, Companion Products, and Availability
Because the DualPlay Mini is a concept rather than a finished product, no full specifications exist. However, Acer says it would use the same Intel G3 chips found in the Predator Atlas 8, which was announced at Computex 2026 in May and is scheduled to ship later this month at a price that has not yet been revealed.
Acer has followed up with the Predator Atlas 7, a smaller and lighter 7-inch model that is presumably more affordable. That handheld is expected to ship around October or later in 2026.
