The Samsung 990 2TB SSD is now available for EUR 292 at Amazon, down from its EUR 455 list price. That 36% discount, worth nearly EUR 172, applies to one of the newest Gen 4 drives on the market at a time when storage prices remain stubbornly high.
Buying additional PC storage has become increasingly difficult, with SSD pricing pressured by the ongoing AI-driven demand crunch. Samsung recently launched this “budget” version of its 990 M.2 drive, and its EUR 454 list price reflects what the company believes the SSD is worth under current market conditions. A year ago, 2TB of storage would have cost considerably less, which makes this markdown notable, especially since drives like this are expected to grow more expensive rather than cheaper.
What the Samsung 990 2TB delivers
The 990 SSD is essentially a QLC-based variant of the 990 EVO Plus. It pairs Samsung’s PiccoloQ controller with V9 QLC flash memory and offers full Gen 4 throughput, with sequential read and write speeds reaching up to 7,250/6,450 MB/s. Power consumption is reasonable, and overall performance is solid across the board.
In testing, the drive scored very close to the 990 EVO Plus in latency, while surpassing the 990 EVO in bandwidth and overall 3DMark results. It also performed well in PS5 testing, making it a viable expansion option for PlayStation owners who want extra console storage.
How it compares to other Samsung drives
At full price, the standard 990 makes little sense against the 990 Pro or Samsung’s Gen 5 9100. At the discounted EUR 292, however, it undercuts both. Shoppers wanting more performance can consider the 990 Pro 2TB, now EUR 334 with a 39% discount, down from EUR 549. Those with a Gen 5-capable motherboard might absorb the additional cost of the 9100 Pro 2TB, currently listed at EUR 343.
A 1TB version of the standard 990 is also on sale, but its discount is only 13%, leaving it at EUR 172 and making it a weaker value than the 2TB configuration.
Storage deals remain hard to swallow, and current signals suggest prices will not ease soon. The AI pricing crunch is expected to keep pushing storage costs higher, meaning waiting could result in paying even more later. The Samsung 990 2TB currently sits at EUR 292 at Amazon.
