PS5 emulation is advancing faster than ever, and the latest milestone proves it. The PlayStation 5 version of GTA V is now at least playable at up to 60 FPS on PC, thanks to modders steadily refining their tools. Just over a month ago, the same game was stuck on its initial splash screen while only 2D titles and a handful of early 3D games ran smoothly. The pace of progress has been dramatic, and much of it appears driven by the community’s desire to eventually run GTA VI on PC ahead of any official port.

Recent footage shows GTA V’s opening mission running at roughly 40 to 60 FPS, with the frame rate fluctuating depending on how much action is on screen. Because this is only the game’s starting mission, the true stress test of the open world remains further out. The title is being emulated using KytyPS5, currently the most prominent PS5 emulator, alongside ShadEmu.

The Hardware Behind the Milestone

The PC running the demonstration used a Ryzen 7 9950X3D CPU paired with an RX 7900 XT GPU, both very high-end components. Despite that power, the experience is far from stable. As soon as the player reaches the shutter that opens to the police waiting outside, the game crashes, cutting off what would have been the first taste of actual gunplay. Even so, reaching this point represents by far the biggest milestone the PS5 emulation scene has hit to date.

One user managed to push past the opening mission and into the open world itself. Performance dropped below 15 FPS during general play, but the frame rate climbed to the mid-40s once the cutscene featuring Franklin and Lamar began. The game crashed the moment that cutscene ended. Notably, GTA V’s cutscenes are not pre-rendered videos; they are rendered in real time by the game engine, making the result an impressive achievement for KytyPS5.

Why GTA V Matters for PS5 Emulation

GTA V is not an especially demanding game. Android flagships from the past three years can emulate it at up to 60 FPS, and the title has long been available natively on PC. The significance here lies in getting the PS5 version running on PC in such a short window, which highlights the emulation community’s dedication as it tackles large 3D projects.

GTA V first booted inside KytyPS5 roughly a week before reaching this playable state, and it is not the only title making progress. At least four other PS5 games are now running smoothly on the emulator, including Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered, STORY OF SEASONS: A Wonderful Life, PAC-MAN WORLD Re-PAC, and Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, all of which are rendering and playable.
