A wide-ranging CPU benchmark test in Onimusha: Way of the Sword shows that AMD’s X3D processors outpace flagship chips by roughly 10%, while Intel’s new Core Ultra 7 270K Plus lands behind the previous Raptor Lake Refresh generation. The results come from testing 31 different processors in the game’s free built-in benchmark, spanning brand-new releases down to older parts like the Ryzen 7 2700X.
Onimusha caps off a strong year for Capcom, arriving after Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata. All three titles run on Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine, which continues to prove highly scalable across a broad range of hardware. While the engine leans more heavily on the GPU than the CPU, clear performance scaling still appeared across the tested lineup.
How the Testing Was Conducted
The in-game benchmark runs about five minutes and consists mainly of two real-time in-engine cutscenes, with a gameplay segment in the back half. That gameplay portion pushes the CPU considerably harder and shows lower performance, so it was chosen as the basis for measurement.
Each system was configured with the Ultra preset, no ray tracing, and no DLSS or FSR upscaling. Testing took place at 1080p paired with an RTX 5090 Founders Edition to isolate CPU performance as much as possible. The benchmark ran three times per CPU, with the median result recorded and any outliers discarded and rerun.
The scale of the engine’s flexibility is notable. Even the aging Ryzen 7 2700X, fully bottlenecking the RTX 5090, neared 90 FPS at 1080p with Ultra settings and ray tracing disabled. The focus of the analysis centers on how CPUs scale relative to one another rather than the raw frame rate of any single chip.
The 12-Core Ryzen 9 Anomaly
Most results landed as expected, but AMD’s 12-core Ryzen 9 models produced a surprising pattern. The Ryzen 9 7900X finished 3% slower than the Ryzen 5 7600X, and the Ryzen 9 9900X trailed the Ryzen 5 9600X by 1%. The issue appears specific to the 12-core parts, since it does not surface in single-CCD Ryzen chips or in the full 16-core, dual-CCD models.
To probe the behavior further, the Ryzen 9 7900X3D was added to see whether 3D V-Cache could offset the 12-core penalty. It could not. While every other X3D chip in the test sits at the top of the charts, the 7900X3D landed in line with the Ryzen 7 7700X.
The cause may be a performance quirk that Capcom could resolve through a patch or that AMD could address with a firmware update. As it stands, the 12-core Ryzen 9 chips underperform relative to their expected placement in Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
