The MSI Katana 15 HX C14 arrives as a value-focused gaming laptop built to counter the ongoing DRAM crisis, which has pushed component costs sharply higher and made affordable gaming notebooks harder to find. Rising prices for memory and SSDs have widened a gap in the entry-level segment, and MSI is answering with a machine that supports both DDR5 and DDR4-3200 memory.
Depending on the region, MSI will offer the laptop in two variants, each with dual SO-DIMM slots configured for either DDR4 or DDR5 compatibility. The cost difference is significant: a 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200 kit runs around EUR 172, while a comparable DDR5-6000 kit exceeds EUR 343. MSI did not list a standard DDR4 capacity, stating only that the system supports up to 96GB.
Processor, Graphics, and Cooling
The Katana 15 HX C14 can be configured with up to a 24-core Intel Core i9-14900HX, part of Intel’s 14th-gen Raptor Lake Refresh lineup, delivering ample CPU headroom for gaming and demanding workloads. Graphics scale up to an Nvidia RTX 5070 laptop GPU, which brings GDDR7 memory, DLSS 4.5, real-time ray tracing, and the latest AI features.
MSI says the laptop is tuned for up to 170W of combined CPU and GPU power. To sustain that output, the cooling system uses dual fans, three heat pipes, and four exhaust outlets. Storage expansion is handled by dual PCIe Gen 4×4 M.2 slots, letting gamers add a dedicated SSD for their game library.
Display, Design, and Connectivity
Display options center on a 15.6-inch IPS panel, available in QHD (2560×1440) with up to a 165 Hz refresh rate or FHD (1920×1080) with up to 144 Hz. The chassis features a stealthy black finish with textured slash patterns inspired by traditional Japanese blades, accented by bright red logos. It measures 22.9mm thick and weighs 4.62 pounds, keeping it compact for a 15-inch gaming notebook.
Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4, along with a USB Type-C port supporting Power Delivery 3.0. Additional features cover a 4-zone RGB keyboard with 1.7mm key travel, a 240W power adapter, a 60Whr battery, and DTS-enhanced dual 2W speakers.
MSI confirms the Katana 15 HX C14 will be available globally, though pricing has not yet been announced.
