The Kaleidescape Compact Terra Prime 246TB SSD is a new luxury media server designed for the most demanding home cinema installations. Built by a company that specializes in premium home theater hardware, the compact vault packs an enormous 246TB of storage aimed at collectors who want reference-grade movie playback at home. While an official price has not been announced, it is expected to land above EUR 129,066 based on the cost of the company’s existing servers.
Paired with the company’s EUR 3,442 Strato V media player, the setup is positioned as one of the closest experiences to a commercial movie theater that money can buy for the living room.
Enterprise SSDs and Massive Capacity
The Compact Terra Prime shares the same chassis as the Strato V player and holds two enterprise-class 123TB SSDs inside. The manufacturer did not confirm the exact drives, but the specifications point to a pair of Solidigm D5-P5336 units. These are PCIe 4.0 ultra-high-density NVMe SSDs built on 3D QLC NAND, most likely in the U.2 form factor.
That combined 246TB of capacity translates to storage for roughly 4,000 standard 4K movies, 2,300 titles in the “4K Cinematic” or 8K tier, or up to 6,800 HD films.
The device is remarkably small and light. It weighs just 4 pounds (under 2 kilograms) and measures 7.87 x 1.52 x 10 inches. Two fans cool the NAND at a maximum noise level of 20 dB. Around back, a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port can download a 4K movie in about 4 minutes when throughput is fully saturated. The entire enclosure is constructed from aluminum.
What “4K Cinematic” Means
Kaleidescape is more than a hardware maker. The company also operates an online movie store that licenses master copies of films directly from major studios, offering very high bitrate content that exceeds most 4K Blu-rays. The 4K Cinematic tier delivers 110 Mbps video with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling and no compression, along with support for HDR formats such as Dolby Vision and lossless audio formats like Dolby Atmos.
Movies cannot be streamed directly from the store. They must be downloaded locally first, which the company frames as essential to its uncompromising picture and sound quality. A proprietary Kaleidescape player is required for playback. The latest Strato V includes 960GB of onboard storage, enough to hold about eight 4K Cinematic titles at once, meaning the server is optional but central to large collections.
Playback Built for Multiple Rooms
Once available, the Compact Terra Prime 246TB supports up to 25 simultaneous instances of 4K playback. That figure exceeds the number of screens running in many full commercial movie theaters, underscoring the server’s role as a backbone for extensive multi-room installations that combine a player, a server, and the company’s movie store into a single high-fidelity system.
