A developer known as danielblnc has found a way to bring DLSS 5 to AMD’s RDNA 4 graphics cards, expanding Nvidia’s upscaling technology beyond its intended hardware. The tool, called “DLSS-NR-on-AMD,” can inject DLSS 5 into any DirectX 12 game that already supports FSR, giving Radeon RX 9000 series owners access to a feature that officially launched inside NBA 2K27 earlier this week.

DLSS 5 debuted alongside NBA 2K27, with additional game support and RTX 40-series compatibility planned for later. For now, only NBA 2K27 natively supports the technology, and the required DLL file was originally leaked from that title. The mod itself does not include the file. Users must supply a “legally obtained” copy themselves, according to the project’s GitHub page.

How the Mod Works and What It Delivers

The project is closed-source, so the exact method remains unclear. Based on educated guesses, the mod likely uses a dynamic wrapper to intercept NGX API calls and trick the DLSS 5 DLL into loading on an AMD card. Once loaded, it extracts the AI model and Tensor data from the DLL and converts those calculations into math that AMD’s matrix accelerators can process through the HIP RT backend, rather than translating CUDA.

The tool then hooks into the game’s FSR pipeline, running frame data through the neural model to produce results comparable to a genuine RTX 50-series GPU, but without any Tensor cores. The mod does not work with any game that requires anti-cheat software.

Performance remains limited even in single-player titles. On the RX 9070 XT, the top-tier RDNA 4 card, Cyberpunk 2077 initially ran at 28 FPS at 1080p with DLSS 5 enabled. A patch improved the frame rate by 12% to a stable 30 FPS, and a later update added a further 2% gain that is likely negligible. Some user reports online have been less optimistic, with performance dropping from over 80 FPS natively to just 11 to 12 FPS with DLSS 5 active. The stated goal is to reach performance similar to an RTX 5070 Ti, a target the developer considers achievable given that both GPUs are matched in rasterization and closely aligned in ray tracing.

Installation and Compatibility

To try the mod, users can download the latest executable from the GitHub page, then place the supplied DLL and the executable inside the game’s bin folder and follow the on-screen instructions. After launching the game, players select FSR 3 or 4 from the in-game graphics settings and press the End key to open a custom menu. That menu allows adjustments to individual parameters such as structure and tone, similar to how the ReShade mod functions, with real-time visual feedback.

Both the RTX 50-series and the RX 9000 series support FP8 formats, but DLSS 5 was designed to run on Tensor cores rather than AMD’s dual-issue AI accelerators, which explains the heavy overhead. Because the RTX 40-series also includes Tensor cores and native FP8 support, Nvidia has confirmed DLS
